Motivational modulation of action control: an individual differences approach

Motivation and reward values are important determinants of our behavior. Yet, their potential for the attenuation of age-related cognitive decline is not fully appreciated. Subcortical links between the reward processing network and task-relevant control networks can interface motivational incentives to goal-oriented actions. Here, we show that healthy elderly can benefit from motivational incentives in an oculomotor task that is known to be sensitive to age-related decline. Next, we use striatum-based probabilistic fiber tractrography to test how individual differences in performance benefits as incurred by reward proposect relate to the integrity of fiber tracts between subcortical reward structures and cortical action control structures. Individual differences in performance benefits from reward prospect relied on stronger anatomical connectivity of dorsal striatum with a distinct network of oculomotor structures.
