Event related potential correlates of intentional and incidental retrieval from episodic memory

Retrieval of information from episodic memory has been found to require the participation of several processes. These involve cognitive control processes, most importantly retrieval mode, that are initiated by the intention to retrieve and considered to be prerequisite for successful retrieval. On the other hand, incidental retrieval, i.e. experiencing episodic memories that arise without overt pre-existing intention or effort, is a well-known phenomenon from daily life. Relatively little is known of the processes supporting incidental retrieval. To examine the similarities and differences between intentional and incidental retrieval, we designed a retrieval task using cue words referring to previously encoded non-verbal information (concrete sounds and pictures). In the intentional retrieval condition, subjects decided whether information corresponding to cue word had been presented during the encoding session. In the physically identical incidental retrieval condition subjects performed a distracter task to minimize retrieval attempts and reported instances of incidental retrieval of the encoded information. EEG was recorded concurrently from 64 channels in 34 young healthy adult participants. The data were preprocessed in a number of steps and subjected to group-level independent component analysis (http://icatb.sourceforge.net/). Group ICA yielded eight temporally independent components which corresponded in topography and peak latency to early visual responses, N2, P3 as well as later slow waves containing a typical P600. We found a significant amplitude modulation of some of these components for the generic old vs. new effect, replicating at large the previous literature. We also found a modulation of memory-related brain activity by intentionality in components with parieto-occipital topographies in the time window of 500-700 ms after the onset of the stimulus; with the ERP amplitude higher for incidental retrieval compared with intentional retrieval condition. We discuss the findings in the context of cognitive control processes governing retrieval from episodic memory.
