Physiological correlates of motivational effects on information processing: Study of ERP indicators of drug addiction and response to rehabilitation treatment

This study concerns the identification of relations between, on one side, craving for the consumption of addictive substances and, on the other side, electrophysiological indicators of attention and stimuli categorization cognitive processes in three samples of patients from Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon and a matched sample of healthy participants. The three samples of patients who participate in substitution therapy program are defined by the duration of abstinence (in one sample greater than six months, in the other greater than three months) and a third sample on occasional relapse. Electrophysiological indicators of motivation and stimuli’ categorization processes are studied in an adaptation of oddball P300 experimental paradigm with three categories of stimuli with different hedonic qualities unrelated to the addiction (positive, negative and neutral) , and two categories of stimuli with content related to the addictive behaviour, one with positive valence and another with negative valence. These five categories of stimuli occur in random sequences with equal probability. After each stimuli presentation subjects are required to evaluate the stimulus’ valence (positive, neutral or negative) pressing one of three keys. EEG records are obtained in Fz, Cz and Pz leads referred to left mastoid. Separately for each one of the five stimuli’ category the EEG records obtained during the time interval of 150 ms prior stimuli presentation and 1 sec pos stimuli are averaged and corrected to the mean of 150 ms prestimuli baseline. Anova repeated measures with within and between subjects factors are computed on latency and amplitude of Positive Late Potentials elicited by each one of the five stimuli categories. This study aims to show a relation between the progress of the rehabilitation treatment of addiction and electrophysiological indicators of motivational, attentional and categorization processes.
