Impact Metrics

Advanced analytics track the impact of your research

From our very beginning we dreamt of an evaluation system that is democratic, takes into account the opinion of many experts and is objective and measureable. Therefore, even with the launch of our first journals in 2008, we provided online impact metrics for articles. Today, we have a wide array of impact metrics that measure the overall performance and reach of articles and authors in an objective and crowd-sourced way.

These metrics are available immediately for every article published by Frontiers, as well as their authors. The metrics offer a real-time view of:

  • Views downloads

  • Citations

  • Social buzz (through altmetrics.com data)

  • Visitor demographics including: age, region and field of interest

  • Aggregated author impact metrics based on all of the above

  • Top referring sites

Frontiers Impact Metrics enable you to receive objective feedback and share the impact of your work with collaborators, funders, institutions, and the research community at large.

We believe this is an important service we provide to our authors, given the significant role that conflicting interests often play in the academic environment. At Frontiers, it is not the opinion of two or three reviewers, however qualified, that determines the importance of a research work, but the entire academic community. Likewise, it is not the ranking of the journal in which an article is published to determine its impact, but the article itself.

These metrics also provide the basis for the selection of outstanding articles in what is known as Frontiers Tiering.

Tiering System

Tiering System

Crowdsourcing the best research

Frontiers is the first publisher with an efficient and transparent method to select outstanding original research and make it more accessible to the wider research communities up to the general public. This is realized by the unique Frontiers Tiering System.

Tiering is the mechanisms that Frontiers invented to distil and highlight academically excellent and socially relevant research articles to a broader audience. Following the publication of original research articles, impact metric data is collected, evaluated and used as a basis for our Chief Editors to invite authors of high impact discoveries to write the prestigious “Focused Review”, a free tier-climbing article type that puts the original discovery into a wider context, for a broader audience and a deeper impact.

The system is purposely designed to gradually distil the most outstanding research through the succession of the Frontiers tiers, evaluated democratically for its academic excellence and social relevance. While climbing up the tiers, the research gains more and more visibility, and addresses an increasingly broader public.
