Brief Biography
John F. Cryan is currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy and Dept. Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland. His is also a Principal Invesitigator in the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, where he co-directs the Laboratory of NeuroGastroenterology with Prof. Ted Dinan. He received a B.Sc. (Hons) in Biochemistry and a PhD in Pharmacology from the National University of Ireland, Galway , Ireland. He spent 15 months as a visiting fellow at the Dept Psychiatry, University of Melbourne , Australia . This was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania , Philadelphia , USA where he investigated pharmacological and genetic approaches to antidepressant action. Subsequently, he was a research associate at the Dept. Neuropharmacology, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla , California . Prior to joining UCC in 2005, he spent four years at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research in Basel , Switzerland , as a LabHead, Behavioural Pharmacology where his research group were responsible for the preclinical characterisation of novel therapeutic targets and ligands for psychiatric disorders. In addition to his regular duties, he was Principal Investigator at the Novartis Site (2003-2005) for National Institutes of Mental Health/National Institute on Drug Abuse grant U01 MH69062 under the auspices of the United States National Cooperative Drug Discovery Groups for the Treatment of Mood Disorders or Nicotine Addiction.
