The Chub mackerel, Scomber colias, is one of the main pelagic fisheries resources in the Northeast Atlantic. Commercial landings of chub mackerel have increased significantly in the Iberian Peninsula, namely in Portugal, during the last years. However the information regarding the population structure of this species, at present, is still limited. Morphometrics are phenotypic characteristics that describe fish body shape, being result of the interaction between environment and genetics. Regional morphometric data variation is useful to discriminate fish stock structure of various exploited marine species, and can provide additional knowledge to a better management and conservation of fisheries. This hereby study analysed juveniles (20 to 25 cm) caught in Azores, Canaries, Madeira and Portugal mainland (Portimão, Sesimbra and Matosinhos) by the artisanal fleets in early 2018. Several anatomic landmarks were defined along the body contour (e.g. fin insertion points) of the individuals using digital photos. Data were analyzed using standard statistics. The purpose of this work was to assess the use of body morphometrics as an alternative tool to obtain new information about the stock structure of S. colias in the NE Atlantic.
