The knowledge of the reproductive cycle of three species of bivalves Cerastoderma edule, Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum of the Lagoa de Óbidos, as well as its storage and nutrient utilization , is fundamental for understanding the behavior of these species. From March to December of 2017, 60 individuals of each species were monthly collected. The size range of the sampled species was for C. edule 25.90 ± 1.85mm and 7.28 ± 1.34g, for R. decussatus 39.08 ± 5.26mm and 13.66 ± 3.6g and for R philippinarum 38.26 ± 3.92mm and 17.76 ± 4.9g. The objective of the study was to characterize the reproductive cycle of the three species in Lagoa de Óbidos (Portugal) through the histological analysis of gonads, gonadal index, glycogen and condition index. In addition, environmental parameters that possibly will influence the reproductive cycle were also evaluated, namely temperature, chlorophyll a and suspended organic matter. The chlorophyll a was determined using the spectrophotometric method proposed by Jeffrey & Lorenzen (1980) and the suspended organic matter was determined using the gravimetric method of Strickland & Parsons (1972). The condition index presented values between 2.70 ± 0.60 and 5.29 ± 0.60for C. edule, between 5.89 ± 1.32 and 9.19 ± 0.67 for R. decussatus and between 4.05 ± 0.47 and 7.24 ± 3.32 for R. philippinarum. C. edule presented two spawning periods: the first one in March/April and the second one in May/June. Ruditapes decussatus started spawning in July/August and R. philippinarum in May/June. Cerastoderma edule and R. decussatus generally used glycogen for the gametogenesis, while R. philippinarum accumulated glycogen during gametogenesis. Ruditapes decussatus and R. philippinarum accumulated an average level of glycogen after spawning allowing an easy recovery after reproductive effort. The study of these three species of the Lagoa de Óbidos is very important to improve the sustainable management of these populations.
