Genetic data reveal unexpected relationships among European freshwater species of the Gobius-lineage

         Gobiidae is one of the largest families of teleost fishes with nearly 2000 currently recognized species. Gobies have a worldwide distribution with exception of Arctic and Antarctic areas. In Europe, three independent evolutionary lineages occur:  – Gobius -, Pomatoschistus - and Aphia - lineage. Some species of this primarily marine fishes adapted to the freshwaters. They belong to the Gobius – and Pomatoschistus – lineages. The freshwater species from the Gobius – lineage are representatives of the monophyletic clade of benthophilines (the species flock of gobies from the Ponto-Caspian region) and the genus Padogobius from the Adriatic – Tyrrhenian area. There are molecular works which suggest that the genus Padogobius might not be monophyletic. The aim of this work was to test the monophyly of the genus Padogobius and reveal its relationships with the rest of the species of the Gobius – lineage. For this purpose, 2 mitochondrial and 2 nuclear markers were analyzed. 
The results of mitochondrial and nuclear markers are consistent and confirm that the genus Padogobius is not monophyletic. Padogobius nigricans s belongs to the genus Neogobius and Padogobius bonelii remains the only species of this genus. However, its relationships with the other species of the Gobius – lineage remain unresolved. Padogobius nigricans belongs to the group that has a Ponto – Caspian distribution, although it inhabits the Tyrrhenian area. Its closest relatives inhabit the fresh and brackish waters around the Black Sea. According to the results based on cytochrome b, it seems that Neogobius nigricans dispersed to Apennine peninsula after the radiation of the genus in the Ponto – Caspian region.
