Objectives:
The present work aimed to perform a proteomics characterization of the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with neurogenerative diseases (NDs) in order to investigate their potential as a minimally invasive biomarker source.
Methods:
This study, started by characterizing samples from the two most common neurodegenerative disorders: Alzheimer and Parkinson’s Disease (AD and PD). To achieve this goal, a state-of-the-art quantitative proteomics, SWATH-MS, was performed for 61 PBMCs samples of which 9 were Control (CTRL), 21 were AD patients, and 18 were from PD patients. This was further tested in 5 potential cases of PD and 8 potential cases of AD.
Results:
This preliminary study resulted in 1938 proteins quantified, from which it was possible to identify groups of proteins capable of distinguishing the NDs from the control samples, and AD from PD patients.
Conclusions:
The results achieved in this preliminary study strengthens the use of PBMCs as a source of potential biomarkers to study neurodegenerative disorders. Future work will comprise the introduction of more disease groups (samples are already being collected), in order to achieve a comprehensive characterization of PBMCs in NDs.
