The aim of this work is to design and synthesize a metal-organic framework (MOF) with specific function. The MOF is a stimulated-responsive porous structure. It owns regularity from its symmetric structure while, on the other hand, it also owns softness being able for the inclusion of guest molecules into its polymeric framework once the stimulation is applied. Via tuning the structure of the MOF with the stimulation, different applications could be expected. In this work, tetra(4-pyridyl)-porphine (TPyP), was used as the precursor for the synthesis of MOF. The formation of the metal-organic gel with zinc(II) and cobalt(II), via the coordination of TPyP, were investigated. The formation of the metallic organic polymer could be the consequence of not only the hydrogen bonds, but also the p-p interaction of the porphyrin plane donated from the electron pairs of the pyridyl groups. The geometric symmetry of the TPyP is an essential feature contributed to the formation of the metallic organic crystal. Zn(II)TPyP was further analyzed by SEM, UV/Vis spectrophotometer, XRD, TGA, and FTIR, so was CoTPyP. Effect of solvents on the formation of MOF was discussed. Different solvents did affect the interaction of molecules and thus formed different patterns of MOFs. Effect of reaction temperatures as well reaction times was also studied. Zn(II)TPyP crystal was further fabricated onto the Au substrate for the electrochemical uptake of bilirubin. The results confirm the successful calibration of bilirubin concentration in the available clinical range with a sensitivity of 0.336 ± 0.021 (μA/cm2)/(mg/dL) by using this inclusion material.
