Primary dental stem cells are, a highly qualified post natal stem, has great potential to differentiate into many different cells. It is a mesenchyme in origin which has same property as neuronal and bone cell. This ability can be applied to cure diseases from hard tissue like bone, cartilage and dentition, more over its special ability to produce nervous cells has great advantage to cure nervous system disease (1). The usage of stem therapy in dentistry world is very popular as the advantages of dental stem cell for maxillofacial disorder to repair many parts of oral cavity like enemal, dentin, eneman pulp, maxilofaical ligamants, salivary galands and more (2). Primary teeth as a source of SCs is a new information and to attain the primary teeth for SCs is more easier and does not involves any invasive procedures and its free from ethical conflicts. However, public is not commonly aware of primary dental SCs and its potential in medical applications. Therefore this research is aimed to assess the level of awareness and perception on primary dental SCs among Malaysians parents. This study was designed in a small scale using low budget to collect the data required to assess the level of awareness and perception on primary dental stem cells of the patients visiting a dental clinic in Melacca from 1st October 2014 to 1st January 2015. A questionnaire with 14 questions was developed by research team and distributed directly to the participants who fulfill the inclusive and exclusive criteria along with information sheet. Only Malaysian parents who were able to read and write in English were included. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20. In total, 60 parents (38 male and 22 female) took part in the survey. In average they have 2 to 3 children. The majority were Malays 48.3% (n=29); followed by Chinese 25% (n=15), Indian 20% (n=12), and other 6.7% (n=4). Most of them were from age group 31 to 35 years old . Majority of them have post graduates, 45% (n=27). Majority of participants (93.3%) have heard about stem cells but only 26.7% (n=16) have heard about primary dental stem cells. Table 1 shows details of awareness of participants on stem cells from primary teeth. The majority do not know the possibility of isolating stem cells from primary dental stem cells and its application on for therapeutic usage. There are 85% (n=51) of the participant supported stem cell research. About 88% (n=53) of the participant was agreed with dental stem cell research and 88% (n=53) of the participant have showed interest in knowing more about the therapeutic benefit of the primary stem cells. A total of 60% (n=36) of the participants would like to donate their child primary teeth for stem cell research. About 63.3% (n=38) would like to conserve their child primary teeth in stem cell banks if there is any bank available for storing. This could be influenced by financial states of the participants because banking of stem cells usually involves a lot of cost and no medical amenity would have cover for that. A significant association is observed between level of education and awareness of dental stem cells as primary education are less aware compared to postgraduate educated participants [X2 (2, N=60)=12.6, p=0.05]. The male participants are significantly less supportive of stem cell research compare to female parents. [X2 (2, N=60)=6.26, p=0.044]. Regardless of demographic factors, majority of participants have a positive perception regarding primary teeth stem cells (Table 2).
