Available ICES landing statistics concerning several species are not accurate because they are often not sorted by species, usually ending up classified under one generic commercial category. The category “gurnards” is one example. Across the European Eastern Atlantic, the category “gurnards” may include as many as 8 different species. Nevertheless, “tub gurnard” is the only species reported by France since 1983 and by Denmark, the Netherlands and Portugal since 2000. The market sampling of the European Data Collection Framework (DCF/NP) is the only reliable source of data for the analysis of species composition of many of the unsorted landing categories. In the case of “gurnards”, allocation keys for species composition in landings were defined based on DCF market sampling since 2009 in Division IXa, and the total annual landings by species estimated for the period 2009-2014. The influence of variables such as time (year and season), space (port and region) and metier in species composition of “gurnards” was assessed to derive the best species allocation key to re-construct backwards the time series of gurnards landings by species and to analyse species trends. Based on this analysis, we discuss the implications for the current Portuguese market concurrent sampling of accommodating a sampling design aiming at estimating the species composition in landings of such unsorted categories.
