Marine toxins, also known as phycotoxins, are naturally occurring chemicals with different structures and toxic activities. On the basis of their properties, these compounds can be divided into three broad classes: hydrophilic, lipophilic and amphiphilic toxins. Under certain ecological conditions, toxic microalgal species of dinoflagellates may produce phycotoxins. As a consequence, filter-feeding bivalves accumulate large amounts of these compounds. Moreover, dinoflagellates may die and thus toxins can be released to water causing a public health threat with a negative economic impact. However, up to now, there are no systems able to reduce or eliminate phycotoxins. In this sense, a new strategy to deal with undesirable substances in food and feed is the employment of nanoscale materials. Hence, the objective of this work was to study the potential of magnetic nanoparticles to absorb marine toxins from contaminated water. Solutions with mixtures of different toxins such as azaspiracis, dinophysistoxins, spirolides or okadaic acid were treated with nanoparticles. Afterwards, these particles were magnetically separated and subsequently dispersed in organic solutions. The adsorption capacity of particles was determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MSMS). Magnetic nanoparticles show good results as adsorbents of lipophilic phycotoxins. Hence, the employment of this mitigation technology could be a good approach to reduce the presence of marine toxins in seawater. This technology is patent protected.
