The estimation of the effective fishing effort from the characteristics of the vessels comprising the small-scale fleet with base in the Canary Islands, makes it possible to create a standardized fishing power index, which encompasses the vessels into three categories with three well-differentiated groups of target species. The group with the lowest fishing power index, which in turn is constituted by smaller boats, focuses its activity on a large number of benthic and demersal species that have a spatial distribution circumscribed to the shallow coastal waters of each island. However, the fractions of the fleet with greater fishing power, with larger vessels, focus their activity on medium-sized pelagic species (small purse seiners) or tuna and related species (baitboat fishing). On this last case, the vessels that make a greater effort operate in fishing grounds outside the islands including waters off the nearby African coast and the Madeira and Azores arquipelagos. In addition, the fishing power is distributed very heterogeneously throughout the archipelago; the largest concentration of vessels with highest fishing effort and more geographical mobility are located in the island of Tenerife, and to a lesser extent in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. On the other hand, it is noteworthy that in some islands, the estimation of the CPUE using the effective effort values shows significantly different from that observed when the number of fishing days is used as the unit of effort. Moreover, in all cases, the CPUE values obtained are higher with the effective fishing effort.
