Our aim was to study the adjuvant properties of babassu oil in comparison to two other standard adjuvants: complete Freund's adjuvant and aluminum hydroxide. Methods: 30 Swiss mice were immunized with the soluble antigen of Leishmania amazonensis in association with babassu oil (BO), complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) or aluminum hydroxide (ALUM). The enzyme immunoassay technique was used to measure antibody production of IgG, IgG1 and IgG2a anti-leishmania. The concentration of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, TNF –α and IFN-γ was determined by Cytometric beads assay (CBA) . The babassu oil group (BO) showed an increased production of IgG, IgG1 and IgG2a, comparable to CFA and ALUM groups. Moreover, the IFN-γ production was higher in this group, the concentration of IL-6 and IL-10 was reduced, suggesting a immunomodulatory effect. We conclude that the babassu oil can be a good adjuvant due its reduced toxicity and due to its immunomodulatory effect, mainly in response to Leishmania antigens. Those results are particularly interesting since the capacity of immumodulation can allow the formulation of vaccines, especially with focus to best protect the individual from infection.
