New Immunology program for Cuban medical students

Background. The basic biomedical sciences, particularly Immunology, give the conceptual basis to the curriculum of Medicine and have an important relevance to medical students, to form de basis for a lifetime about de immune system and its potential for use in improving the human condition. The growing amount of information considered to be essential in basic and clinical disciplines obligates to integrate their knowledge and to advance to a new curricular program. In addition, it is necessary to consider the final functions of the professional, the social need, the social world, and Cuban context to determinate the objectives and knowledge in medical school programs. The current world context is characterized by problems of health that need a better understanding of the human immune system and its role in health and disease. Consequently, it is important that medical students see the relevance of studies of immune system in the health human been at the different material levels (molecules, cells, tissues, organs, system, and society) in order to integrate and to relate with structural and functional change in clinical problems and its psychosocial components. Aim. To updates the Immunology program for medical curriculum organization in correspondence with the medical social needs and current world and Cuban context. Results. The new program that includes all basic immunology in the health human was performed. The association of immunology with clinic was also include. These permit the integration with other basic biomedical sciences and clinical disciplines during the General Medicine as major discipline. In addition, additional immunology courses for the first 3 semesters and optative courses for the other semesters of the career were included. Conclusion. The new immunology program was approved. Changes in the methodological approaches were introduced. A new Immunology book is been writing.
