The marine and freshwater sole genus Brachirus Swainson 1839 (Soleidae) is currently known from 19 valid species occurring from freshwater rivers in Southeast Asia and Australia and tropical to temperate region of the Indo-West Pacific. During a taxonomic study on the genus, a species currently identified as Dagetichthys marginatus (Boulenger 1900), distributed in Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines, is regarded as an undescribed species. The undescribed species has diagnostic features of the genus Brachirus (rather than the genus Dagetichthys Stauch and Blanc 1964) such as opercular openings of both body sides confluent in the front of the pelvic fins, more than 4 pelvic-fin rays in ocular side, and no distinct ethmoid process. Brachirus sp. [170.4–324.0 mm standard length (SL)] can be distinguished from all members of the genus in having the following combination of characters: 71–76 (modally 73) dorsal-fin rays; 5–6 (5) and 4–5 (5) pectoral-fin rays in ocular and blind sides, respectively; 5 and 4–5 (5) pelvic-fin rays in ocular and blind sides, respectively; 14–15 (14) caudal-fin rays; 145–150 (149) pored lateral-line scales; body depth 48.0–52.6% (mean 50.8%) of SL; usually dark gray vertical bands on ocular side; and body without series of small white blotches along with the dorsal- and anal-fin bases on ocular side. Although Brachirus sp. is most similar to Brachirus swinhonis (Steindachner 1867) known only from the holotype from Hong Kong, B. swinhonis differs from the former in having 70 dorsal-fin rays, 108 pored lateral-line scales, a shallower body depth (41.5% of SL), and body with a series of small white blotches along with the entire dorsal- and anal-fin bases on ocular side, and lacking dark gray vertical bands on ocular side. Incidentally, true D. marginatus is restricted to the southwestern Indian Ocean where it has been recorded only from South Africa.
