Solidarity & Science: Introducing the European Solidarity Corps

Volunteering always had a big role in science (e.g. data collection and dissemination of science). Unfortunately, there is currently a lack of support and conditions for such kind of assistance. The European Solidarity Corps (ESC), a new European Union initiative, is looking to improve these current limitations. It wishes to create well-supported opportunities for young people to volunteer or work in projects that benefit communities and people around Europe. The purpose of this communication is to inform the scientific community of this initiative, explaining some of its key features and the story of a successful project, hoping this way to promote the increase in the collaboration between scientific research and ESC projects. Basic notions of who can join, how to join and the kind of support given are briefly mentioned. The access of the ESC website is recommended for more information, especially for organizations interested in submitting their own projects and youngsters wishing to take part on the ESC initiatives. The pictures, projects and feedback given come from a successful collaboration between the Research Institute of Tour du Valat and a volunteer from the ESC program. In short, the ESC allows scientific research managers to easily find a properly supported and well-suited volunteers. Additionally, it is a way for volunteers to gain real life scientific experience, the proper retribution for their efforts and to disseminate science throughout Europe. Further collaborations need to be developed and improved, being the author and the ESC open for dialogue.
