RESOLVING CHRONIC PAIN AND CAFFEINE ADDICTION IN A TWENTY FIVE YEAR OLD POST-GRADUATE STUDENT USING SPECIFIC BRAIN REHABILITATION STRATEGIES AS WELL AS DIETARY AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Background: A 25-year-old female post-graduate student presented with complaints of malaise, chronic fatigue, constipation and pain in all of her joints, including her spine and all extremities. She drank 6 tall Starbucks median roast coffees daily to function minimally from 7am to 7pm in school. Neurological examination revealed positive heel to shin test on the right, right sided dysdiadochokinesia when performing alternating palms up and down testing and dysmetria was evidenced on finger to nose testing on the left and finger tapping testing on the right. Hippus and square wave jerks were present during horizontal saccades bilaterally and downward optokinetic testing. She evidenced accommodation spasm on convergence testing.
Methodology: Two weeks of diet and lifestyle changes were recommended. The patient was instructed to avoid drinking coffee nightly after 7pm, to drink 60oz of water/day, to eat a ketogenic diet, to take probiotic supplements, to prioritize commitments, to avoid anxiety provoking stressors, to decrease daily tasks, to meditate, to perform breathing exercises, and to sleep 8 hours per night. She was instructed to take daily naps or drink tea in substitution for coffee. Exercises were given to strengthen weak muscles and stretch the tight muscles to correct postural imbalances. She performed gaze stabilization exercises and slow horizontal pursuits protocols. During the second week of treatment there was an addition of right-sided complex passive proximal joint exercises. During these two weeks conservative chiropractic manipulation therapy was also given.
Results: The patient reported decreased pain overall, increased quality of sleep, greater alertness throughout the day, more efficient breathing patterns and increased bowel movements. She had eliminated caffeine. Her sense of smell, vision, touch, coordination, balance, and eye movements had all improved when retested. She reported feeling “the fog was lifted in her brain.”
Conclusion: Controlling and eliminating certain external stressors and utilizing specific brain protocols produced the noticeable rehabilitation of function that was evidenced in this case. These results suggest further study be performed in this area.
