Background:
A 48-year-old male presented with chief complaints of hearing loss due to bilateral Meniere’s, disease as well as episodes of dizziness occurring three to six times per year. Symptoms began with aural fullness three years prior to presentation. Hearing loss began in the left ear and was much more severe than the loss in the right ear. Hearing function in the right ear fluctuates. Prior to presentation the patient had received intratympanic steroid injection with no improvement in his hearing. At the time of presentation he had been taking hydrochlorothiazide for three years and was following a “Paleo” diet.
Methods:
Blood chemistry revealed a high fasting glucose (104), low vitamin D (25) and the following clinically significant results: anion gap (19), lactate dehydrogenase (139), homocysteine (14.2). Patient was placed on an anti-inflammatory diet and supplement protocol featuring a broad-spectrum multivitamin/multimineral/glandular, turmeric, resveratrol, vitamin D, omega fatty acids, topical glutathione and a pH buffering mineral formula.
Results:
After 30 days of treatment, patient reported 50% improvement in the right ear function. After 60 days of treatment, he reported completely normal hearing in the right ear, and some improvement in the left ear.
Conclusion:
The author suggests further investigation into clinical nutrition and anti-inflammatory supplementation in the treatment of the symptoms of Meniere’s disease.
