Clinical Nutrition and Neurorehabilitation Program Improves Gastroparesis Symptoms

Background: A sixty-nine-year-old female with gastroparesis presented with chief complaints of maldigestion, bloating, abdominal pain, and weight loss. The onset of gastroparesis was following chemotherapy and radiation treatment for breast cancer. Methods: Neurological examination revealed left palatal paresis and hyperactive gag response. Glucose and lactulose breathe test showed significant increases in hydrogen and methane gases. She was placed on probiotic strains bifidobacterium lactis HN019 and lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938, partially hydrolyzed guar gum prebiotic, and given humming and gargling exercises to be performed daily. Results: All presenting complaints of maldigestion, bloating, abdominal pain, and weight loss was relieved after 4.5 months. Improvements in palatal paresis and normalization of hyperactive gag response were also noted. Conclusion: Clinical nutrition and neurorehabilitation might be helpful in the management of gastroparesis. Further investigation into clinical nutrition and neurorehabilitation in the treatment of patients with gastroparesis is suggested.
