Event Abstract

Welcome to the ELAN toolbox: a free software for advanced electrophysiological data analysis

  • 1 INSERM, France

The last decade has witnessed extensive methodological developments in signal processing techniques that are applied in neuroscience. In particular, electrophysiological signal analysis had followed a strong trend towards multi- dimensional analysis of large data sets, including single-trial time-frequency analysis of high spatio-temporal resolution recordings. We present a freely available software package called ELAN (Aguera et al., in press) which provides a wide range of signal analysis tools for electrophysiological data. ELAN can be used to analyze scalp-level electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), intracranial EEG, and local field potentials (LFPs). The ELAN toolbox is based on 25 years of methodological developments at the Brain Dynamics and Cognition laboratory (Lyon Neuroscience Research Center, INSERM U1028 - CNRS UMR5292) and was used in many papers including the very first studies of time-frequency analysis of EEG data exploring evoked and induced oscillatory activities in humans. We provide an overview of the concepts and functionalities of ELAN and highlight its complementarity and interoperability with other toolboxes. Illustrative examples of both time and frequency domain analysis will be provided and future functionalities will be discussed. The toolbox is written in C and is available for multiple Linux distributions but can also be used under Windows or MAC OS using virtualization software. Download options, user manual and an online user community mailing list and forum are available on the ELAN official website (http://elan.lyon.inserm.fr).
