Event related fMRI study of deliberate deception

The aim of the present event related fMRI research was to study the deliberate deception in ecologically valid experimental conditions. Deception can be defined as “a successful or unsuccessful deliberate attempt, without forewarning, to create in another a belief which the communicator considers to be untrue” (Vrij 2008, p. 15). Therefore in order to deceive others one has consciously to manipulate by another’s knowledge. Taking that into account we developed experimental paradigm (Kireev et al., 2007) that allowed making free choice between honesty and deception. The task was to play with computer opponent in analog of “True/False” card game. Participants were instructed to convince the computer opponent to trust in deceptive response and to reject honest ones. There were manipulative deceptive, manipulative honest and catch (obligatory truthful) trials.12 right-handed healthy volunteers aged 20-44 (25,3 ±4,6) years participated in the study. Blood oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) functional images were acquired with a Philips Achieva 3T scanner. EPI imaging was performed with 32 axial slices (3mm thick, 0.3 mm gap) covered whole cerebrum (TR/TE=2000/35 msec, FOV=24 cm, matrix=64×64) with 3×3×3 mm voxel size. fMRI data were analyzed with SPM 8 (http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk). Resulting statistical parametric maps were threshold at p<0.05 (FWE). The main finding of the present study is that the manipulative deceptive and honest actions were characterized by activation within the anterior cingulated cortex (ACC). Observed increase in BOLD-signal in the ACC reproduce findings from our previous PET study of deliberate deception (Kireev et al., 2010) and supports the proposition that the brain mechanism of error detection impact to the brain processing of deception.
