Event Abstract

Principal components analysis demonstrates a common schizoidal phenotype within autistic and schizotypal tendency: implications for neuroscientific studies.

Behavioural and cognitive similarities within the autism and schizophrenia spectra have been extensively reported, particularly in terms of pervasive social cognitive and communication dysfunction (Barneveld et al 2011; Hurst et al, 2007; Solomon et al 2011). We investigate how these disorders represent a similar phenotype at a personality level, in schizoid personality types. Positive schizotypy has been found as diametric to autistic tendency and Negative schizotypy through Principal Components Analysis (PCA) (Dinsdale et al, 2013), leading to confusion in distinguishing the two spectrum disorders.

The Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) and Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) were combined and presented to 130 (61 male, 69 female) non-clinical participants aged 18-39. A PCA revealed a three component solution, the first component reflected Perceptual-Behavioural Oddities (Cognitive-Perceptual and Disorganised SPQ), the second; Interpersonal-Communication Dysfunction (Interpersonal SPQ and AQ), and the third; Odd Beliefs (SPQ). AQ was strongly correlated with Interpersonal-Communication (r=0.81, p
