Purpose: The noradrenergic and serotonergic system may have a role in modulation of absence seizures. We investigated weather the monoamine reuptake inhibitor clomipramine has an effect on spike-wave discharge activity in one of the model animals of absence epilepsy. Results: Intraperitoneally administered clomipramine dose dependently (20 and 50 mg/kg) increased the incidence and duration of spike-wave discharge episodes in Wistar Albino Glaxo/Rijswijk rats. Conclusions: Clomipramine could exacerbate absence seizures.
