Neural cell cycle dysregulation and central nervous system diseases: role of Cdk1

Age-related neurological disorders, including stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, are becoming a major health care problem in many countries as average life expectancy is increasing. Neuronal death is indeed the common point between these diseases and will lead to symptomatology. Two therapeutic approaches can be considered: firstly, the prevention or cessation of programmed cell death and secondly, the replacement of lost neurons thanks to the recruitment of endogenous neural stem cells present in two specific areas of the central nervous system (CNS), the adult dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricles (B). Both strategies share a common molecular mechanism: the cell cycle. This work focus on the cyclin dependant kinase 1 (Cdk1), a major regulator of the cell cycle
