Ultrastructure of endometrium after administration of testosterone in rats

The objective of this work was to study the ultrastructure of endometrium in female rats after administration of a very high dose of testosterone. The study group, which consisted of adult albino Wistar female rats weighing 175-180g, was administered 25 mg of testosterone i.m. A second group of rats was used as a control group. Following the sacrifice of the rats, the uterine tissue specimens were fixated into a 3% solution of gluteraldehyde and then, after the usual preparation for Electron Microscopy, they were studied using a Tramsmission Electron Microscope (TEM). In the study group, one remarkable finding was the presence of several secretory cysts in the endometrial glands, some of which were vacuous and some of which were full of content. In some nuclei of the glands there was a perinuclear edema locally. In the myometrium, numerous fibrils of collagen were detected among the muscle cells. These findings lead to the conclusion that after a very high dose of testosterone, rat endometrium has undergone abnormal morphological changes which may lead to functional changes as well.
