Pattern reversal evoked visual potentials (PR-VEPs) is a method to study the visual development (e.g. visual acuity) in infants. Recent research showed a rapid decrease in PR-VEP latencies and an increase in visual acuity during the early postnatal period. The objective of the present study was to follow up the age-related changes of visual acuity within normal preterm and full-term infant population. Binocular checkerboard PR-VEPs were evoked by five different check sizes (120’ down to 7.5’ in octave steps) once in every 1-4 weeks in 62 pre- and full-term infants between 1 and 10 months of postnatal age. We determined the age of the first significant response for each check size and the P100 latencies for each size and for each age, respectively. We compared these results within the two groups as a function of postmenstrual age (PMA). The VEPs were assessed by the T2circ statistic. The P100 latencies decreased rapidly from the 40th to 50th PMA-weeks. The onset ages of significant VEP responses to smaller check sizes (30’, 15’) were 46th and 52nd PMA-weeks, respectively. The first significant VEP response to the smallest (7.5’) check size could be recorded at around half a year of age. Adult-like responses could not be recorded within the 10 month of age for the smallest check size. No significant difference was found in the development of visual acuity between the preterm and full-term infants. In conclusion, prematurity has no influence on the development of visual acuity-related cortical PR-VEP responses.
