During last years it has been shown that the P600 component gets elicited in contexts devoid of any syntactic violations. Usually it was obtained at verbs which didn’t semantically match preceding noun-phrase argument(s) biases towards a different interpretation of the sentence than that dictated by the syntax (arguments assigning thematic roles unacceptable for the critical verb). In the present experiment on Polish we show that it is possible to elicit the P600 in simple active sentences, where the direct object introduces semantic violation by breaking selectional restrictions for animacy. We discuss this effect in context of current theories for functional role of the P600 component.
