Event Abstract

Outcome and emotional learning of intensive in virtuo exposure for fear of flying

  • 1 Université du Québec en Outaouais, Canada

Research in the field of sleep shows that REM sleep is associated with activation of the limbic system and learning. A preliminary study conducted by our team suggested that REM sleep plays a role in the treatment of phobia in virtual reality. To explore further this area of research, we treated nine people suffering from aviophobia with an intensive two-day in virtuo exposure program. Patients slept in the lab for five nights while their sleep patterns were monitored. Results showed that intensive therapy affects the robust pattern of sleep stages and, despite the small sample, suggested that percentage of REM sleep is related to treatment outcome.
