While functional neuroimaging allows for precise spatial characterization of the default-mode network (DMN), its neural correlates and fine-scale temporal dynamics are still poorly understood. We report on several studies in our group that examined the electrophysiological basis of DMN using stereotactic-electroencephalography (SEEG) depth electrodes to record intracerebral activity in patients performing a series of attention-demanding tasks. All patients had drug-resistant epilepsy and were implanted with depth electrodes in multiple brain regions, including lateral and medial structures. We used wavelet-based time-frequency analysis to assess task-related modulations of oscillatory activity in multiple frequency bands, as well as modulations of broad-band high gamma power (Jerbi et al., 2009). Direct intracerebral recordings from default-mode structures (including MPC and PCC) revealed that attention-demanding tasks (Navon task and a word vs pseudoword reading task) lead to suppression of high gamma-band (60-140 Hz) activity. Remarkably, gamma power suppressions in default-mode regions were found to be concurrent with gamma power increases in specific fronto-parietal structures assumed to be part of attentional networks (Jerbi et al., 2010). The observed gamma power suppression in DMN structures during stimulus processing extends previous intracranial studies by our group that also reveal gamma deactivations during reading (Lachaux et al., 2008) and visual search (Ossandon et al., 2009). The patterns of transient task-related gamma modulations provide important electrophysiological insights into the neural signatures of attention networks.
