Brain-body impact of lateralized emotional scenes

Research in affective neuroscience has suggested a hemispheric specialization in emotional processing. In this study, we investigated the brain-body impact of lateralized emotional scenes during an affective categorization task. More precisely, participants had to categorize as fast as possible unpleasant, neutral and pleasant scenes of the International Affective Pictures System presented in the right (RVF) and in the left visual fields (LVF) while we recorded whole head magnetoencephalogram (MEG) and skin conductance response (SCR). Results showed an arousal effect on behavioral performance whatever the stimulated visual hemi-field. MEG analyses revealed that the emotional arousal impact was faster in the right anterior affective structures (180 ms), including the temporal pole and the orbitofrontal areas, for the LVF than in the left ones for the RVF (285 ms). Furthermore, for the LVF, there was a rapid effect of emotional negative valence in the right (230 ms) and later in the left visual areas (285 ms); for the RVF, at this latency, there was an effect of positive valence in the right cingulum. SCR results evidenced an interaction effect between emotional valence and the visual hemi-field showing higher mean SCR magnitude for unpleasant pictures than for the pleasant ones in the LVF whereas the opposite pattern occurred in the RVF. These results indicate a spatio-temporal hemispheric specialization of emotional processing: the impact of emotional arousal is faster in the right hemisphere than in the left one; then, the impact of emotional valence persists for the unpleasant pictures presented in the LVF and for the pleasant ones in the RVF. Thus, this study provides new insights into the hemispheric coding of emotional processes and their impact at body level.
