The southern population of Mugil liza is distributed from São Paulo, Brazil (23 °S) to Argentina (36 °S), and spawning occurs at offshore water between the Santa Catarina and Paraná coasts (28 - 26 °S), after a northward coastal migration. Juveniles use southern estuaries as nursing grounds and prior to recruitment into estuaries young-of-the-year use surf zone as a temporary habitat. This life-cycle phase is defined as “pre-recruitment phase” and is described as movement of departure from the neustonic environment and the occupancy of surf zone shallow waters by individuals ≤ 30 mm in total length. This study analyzed the relationship between environmental variables and the presence and abundance of “pre-recruits” in the surf zone adjacent to the six major estuaries of southern Brazil (between 29 °S and 34 °S), monthly form June 2011 to May 2012, using generalized linear models. Estuary size (area) was the variable responsible for most of the explicability of the models. Patos Lagoon was the site with the highest probability of occurrence and a greater abundance of pre-recruits, adding up to 51.7% of the total “pre-recruit” abundance of M. liza among the six sites sampled. This result shows the preference of “pre-recruits” for the coastal area adjacent to the mouth of the Patos Lagoon Estuary revealing that Patos Lagoon is the main nursery area for M. liza southern population.
