Event Abstract

CLINICAL NUTRITION PROGRAM IMPROVES PARESTHESIA, HEADACHES, INVOLUNTARY MOVEMENTS AND CHRONIC VESTIBULAR AND CEREBELLAR SYMPTOMS IN A 46 YEAR OLD MAN

  • 1 Carrick Institute, United States

Background: A 46 year old man presented with constant unsteadiness, headaches three to four times per week, lack of coordination on "bad" days, tingling sensation in hands, legs, feet and face, constant tinnitus as well as episodes of tremors and muscle spasms. When walking he feels as if his visual scene bounces up and down and that his left leg is slower. He was previously diagnosed with BPPV and Meniere's Disease. He experienced only dizziness until he took Celexa in 2012. After this his symptoms worsened and he began experiencing self-described "tremors", muscle spasms, memory loss, lack of coordination and numbness in the extremities. He stopped taking the Celexa in 2015. One doctor had even suggested he had an autoimmune problem affecting his cerebellum. Additionally, he felt as if his body is moving right but the world is moving left. Sometimes he felt that he would fall backwards. He feels like he will fall right or veer right when his eyes are closed. Occasionally, he experienced whole body jerks. His family history was significant for a father with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Methods: The patient had a strong adverse clinical reaction to Th-1 stimulators. Blood chemistry revealed clinically significantly low Vitamin D (30.7 ng/ml). He was placed on an anti-inflammatory diet and supplement protocol including vitamin D, turmeric, resveratrol, Omega fatty acids, glutamine and multivitamin/mineral with therapeutic levels of chromium and vanadium. Results: After 30 days of his treatment plan, the patient reported significant improvements: tingling was 80% reduced; whole body jerks were 90% improved; the slowing of the left leg during gait was 70% improved; his unsteadiness was improved but not as greatly as his other symptoms, a self-reported 50% improvement. He reported that he hadn't felt "this normal" in several years. Over the the next 2 months he maintained this reduction in symptoms until he was exposed to some food in his diet that caused a recurrence of all his presenting chief complaints. That flare-up lasted for 2 days. We were able to determine severe reactivity to the following items that caused severe exacerbation of his symptoms: potatoes, soy, sunflower oil, decaf coffee, and red bell peppers. Conclusions: The author suggests that further investigation into clinical nutrition and supplementation in the treatment of chronic vestibular symptoms, especially in patients with a history suggestive of autoimmunity.
