CLINICAL NUTRITION AND SUPPLEMENTATION PROGRAM IMPROVES AUTISM SYMPTOMS IN 6 YEAR OLD GIRL

Background: A 7 year old girl presented with a diagnosis of Autism. She experienced anxiety and sensory defensiveness in public spaces. If a baby was crying, she would have a meltdown. She would often perseverate by saying random words and expect her parents to repeat them. She would say contextually inappropriate words and phrases. She ripped up strips of paper constantly and waved them in front of her. She also had symptoms of pica demonstrated by occasionally eating Play-Doh. At the time of presentation she had been following a gluten-free, milk-free and sugar-free for three months. Her family history was significant for a half-brother also diagnosed with Autism but was apparently currently neurotypical, as well as a sister with seizure disorder. Notably, during development she crawled backwards or rolled, never conventionally crawled. She used to grind her teeth but did not do so at time of presentation. Methods: After ingesting T-helper 1 cytokine boosters, she cried uncontrollably, had multiple tantrums, repeated phrases obsessively and scratched her face. According to her mother this was worst behavior from the patient she had ever seen. After ingesting T-helper 2 cytokine boosters, for approximately three hours, the patient demonstrated increased conversational skills and eye contact. Blood chemistry revealed Vitamin D deficiency (20.3 ng/ml), uric acidemia (5.9 mg/dL) as well as clinically significant levels of TPO antibodies (14 IU/mL), B12 (503 pg/mL) , folate (12 ng/mL) and serum magnesium (1.9 mg/dL). Urinary organic acid testing (Genova Diagnostics) testing revealed low Sulfate (1,011), high D-lactate (3.3) and high p-Hydroxyphenylactate (0.34). The patient continued the gluten-free, milk-free and sugar-free diet and was placed on an anti-inflammatory supplement protocol including turmeric, resveratrol, Omega-3 fatty acids, topical glutathione, glutamine, multimineral electrolytes, and magnesium. Results: After thirty days, the patient was able to sit through an entire church service for the first time in three years. The frequency of perseveration with word repetition reduced significantly. She stopped eating non-food items. She began using longer sentences to answer questions. She began interacting with her sister, which previously she would rarely do. The ripping paper behavior did not improve. Over the next five months, her expressive language continued to improve significantly, she had rare meltdowns, and was no longer reactive to a baby crying. The ripping paper behavior did not improve. Conclusion: The author suggest further investigation into the use of clinical nutrition and supplementation in the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
