Adaptation and inference

Adaptation occurs in many forms in single neurons and neural systems. While some forms of adaptation serve to optimize the flow of information through the system, the role of adaptation of the firing rate to changes in the stimulus statistics is less clear. In some cases, this adaptation appears to encode the stimulus envelope, with a transfer function that approximates fractional differentiation. From another perspective, adaptation can be interpreted as on-line estimation of the time-varying statistics. We show that a simple model for this on-line estimation can predict experimentally observed timescales of adaptation.
