Aim: One of the main goals of sport and exercise practitioners and coaches is to provide support to athletes in order to achieve exceptional performance more regularly. Athletes are often called clutch players or clutch performers when they perform better than usual under pressure. However, no valid and reliable questionnaires are currently available to empirically measure if, and how, clutch states are experienced in sport and exercise. Therefore, this study aims to develop and provide preliminary validation of a new psychometric measure for clutch states in sport and exercise. Method: An initial item pool was developed based on recent qualitative studies of clutch states in sport and exercise. To obtain content validity of the questionnaires, 5 experts who had published peer-reviewed academic studies on clutch states and clutch performance were invited to provide feedback on the items. After the expert review, the number of items were reduced from 42 to 36. Subsequently, the items were tested via exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Participants were recruited as soon as possible after they finished participating in sport or exercise activities and were asked to answer a questionnaire about their experiences. A total of 140 participants answered to the clutch questionnaire (Mage = 33.46, SD = 12.63, Male = 66, Female = 71, N/A = 3). Results: An EFA was used to assess the factor structure of the questionnaire. A KMO of .84 showed a meritorious value. The scree plot was ambiguous and showed inflexions that would justify retaining either 2 or 4 factors. After running a reliability analysis, it was decided to retain 2 factors as the Cronbach’s tests of reliability showed that both factors were appropriate, with α = .87 and α = .90. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary validation of a new questionnaire to measure clutch states in sport and exercise.
