<abstract><p>Catalytic liquid-phase oxidation using a catalyst and oxygen gas (Catalytic wet air oxidation, CWAO) is one of the most promising technology to remove hazardous organic compounds in wastewater. Up to now, various heterogeneous catalysts have been reported for phenolic compounds decomposition. The CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> based catalysts have been recently studied, because CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> works as a promoter which supplies active oxygen species from inside the lattice to the active sites. Since it is difficult to dissolve oxygen gas into water, the use of the promoter is effective for realizing the high catalytic activity at moderate conditions. Also, CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> shows high resistance for the metal leaching during the catalytic reaction in the liquid-phase. This article reviews the studies of the catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of phenolic compounds using CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> based catalysts.</p></abstract>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p>To date, industrial sector has been rapidly growing and consequently contributing to an increase in hazardous waste. Phenolic compounds, e.g., phenol, chlorophenol, and bisphenol-A, are well-known organic pollutants encountered in the wastewater. They have been used as raw material in many kinds of industries for the production, such as phenol resins, polycarbonate plastics, and acetylsalicylic acid. However, phenolic compounds are toxic substances for human health and lethal to aquatic life in water. Especially, bisphenol-A has identified as an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) and functions as an estrogenic substance in living organisms even at very low concentration level (Geens et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">2012</xref>). To protect the environment and our health, it is necessary to remove these pollutants from wastewater.</p>
<p>The conventional treatments are activated carbon treatment, coagulating sedimentation process, and biodegradation process (Chung et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">2003</xref>; Villegas et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B42">2016</xref>; Karri et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">2017</xref>); however, these processes have problems, such as replacement of activated carbon, post-treatment of sediments, and control of temperature and pH for microorganisms. Although advanced treatment technologies have been studied using UV irradiation, strong oxidizing agents (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> or O<sub>3</sub>), Fenton reagent (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> &#x0002B; Fe<sup>3&#x0002B;</sup>), and ultrasound (Rosenfeldt and Linden, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">2004</xref>; Torres et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">2008</xref>; Nidheesh, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">2015</xref>; Zhang et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">2018</xref>), they require constant supply of hazardous oxidizing additives, UV irradiation, or ultrasonic irradiation.</p>
<p>A liquid-phase oxidation with a gaseous oxygen, wet air oxidation (WAO), is the simple process for wastewater treatment without photoirradiation, sonication, nor addition of oxidizing agent. However, the effective removal requires elevated temperatures (125&#x02013;320&#x000B0;C) and high pressures (0.5&#x02013;20 MPa) in order to increase the solubility of oxygen molecule in the solution (Zimmermann, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">1958</xref>; Li et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">1991</xref>; Mishra et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">1995</xref>). One of the most promising processes to realize the high efficiency under the mild conditions is a catalytic liquid-phase oxidation, generally denoted as catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO). Homogeneous catalysts based on copper salts are reported to exhibit effective catalytic oxidation for treating wastewater (Imamura et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">1982</xref>; Kulkarni and Dixit, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">1991</xref>; Lin et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">1996</xref>); however, the dissolved catalysts must be separated due to the toxicity of copper ions. Therefore, heterogeneous catalysts have received attention, because the additional separation process is not necessary. For the heterogeneous catalysts, metal oxides and supported noble metals have been extensively studied. Among the metal oxide catalysts, such as CuO, ZnO, and MnO<sub>2</sub> (Katzer et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">1976</xref>; Pintar and Levec, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">1994</xref>; Chen et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2001</xref>; Santos et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">2005</xref>), CeO<sub>2</sub>-based catalysts are effective for the oxidation of organic pollutants. In particular, CeO<sub>2</sub>-MnO<sub>2</sub> solid solutions exhibited the high catalytic activity for decomposing organic compounds (Imamura et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">1985</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">1987</xref>; Ma et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">2017</xref>), while these catalysts were deactivated because of the leaching of the active phase and the formation of carbonaceous deposits, likely due to the presence of manganese (Delgado et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">2006</xref>). Noble metals (Pt, Ru, and Pd) have generally high catalytic activity and high resistance for metal leaching compared to metal oxides (Imamura et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">1988</xref>; Masende et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">2005</xref>). However, they still require severe reaction conditions compared to ambient temperature and pressure. Since it is difficult to dissolve oxygen gas into water at moderate conditions, a promoter which supplies active oxygen species from its lattice toward an activator is an important component. Recently, ceria-zirconia (CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub>) based catalysts have been paid attention for the wastewater treatment due to their high oxygen release and storage abilities.</p>
<p>In this mini-review, we provided the studies on the heterogeneous catalysts based on CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> solid solutions for catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of phenolic compounds.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s2">
<title>CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> solid solutions</title>
<p>CeO<sub>2</sub> is one of the most famous promoters, because of its unique non-stoichiometric characteristics resulting from the ability of easily transition between reduced and oxidized states (Ce<sup>3&#x0002B;</sup>&#x021C4; Ce<sup>4&#x0002B;</sup> &#x0002B; e<sup>&#x02212;</sup>) (Trovarelli, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">1996</xref>; Montini et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">2016</xref>). This allows CeO<sub>2</sub> to store gaseous oxygen into its crystal lattice and subsequently release active oxygen from the bulk material. Therefore, CeO<sub>2</sub> can work as a promoter to facilitate the oxidation of organic compounds by supplying active oxygen to the activator. Zirconium ions (Zr<sup>4&#x0002B;</sup>) are generally introduced into the CeO<sub>2</sub> lattice to increase the oxygen release and storage abilities (Fornasiero et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">1995</xref>). In the CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> binary system, various crystal structure have been reported. Yashima et al. proposed the phase diagram of the CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> system by using X-ray powder diffraction measurement and Raman spectroscopy (Yashima et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">1994</xref>; Varez et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B41">2006</xref>; Montini et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">2016</xref>). The phase diagram shows three different tetragonal phases (<italic>t, t</italic>&#x02032;, and <italic>t</italic><sup>&#x02032;&#x02032;</sup>), in addition to the monoclinic ZrO<sub>2</sub> phase and the cubic CeO<sub>2</sub> phase. The monoclinic and/or <italic>t</italic> phases were formed for CeO<sub>2</sub> content less than ca. 20 mol%, where the monoclinic phase is thermodynamically stable for pure ZrO<sub>2</sub> at room temperature. In the CeO<sub>2</sub> rich area above 90 mol%, the cubic phase was detected. The <italic>t</italic>&#x02032; and <italic>t</italic><sup>&#x02032;&#x02032;</sup> phases were regarded as the metastable phase at intermediate compositions of 20&#x02013;90 mol% CeO<sub>2</sub>. For the 50 mol% CeO<sub>2</sub> content, other metastable structure has been identified to be pyrochlore, &#x003BA; and <italic>t</italic><sup>&#x0002A;</sup> phases, which are cation-ordered phases (Montini et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">2016</xref>). According to Fornasiero et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">1995</xref>), the highest oxygen storage value is found for the Rh supported on cubic Ce<sub>0.5</sub>Zr<sub>0.5</sub>O<sub>2</sub> sample. By applying the oxygen release and storage abilities, the CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> solid solution has been commercialized as promoters in automotive exhaust catalysts.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s3">
<title>Catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of phenol</title>
<p>As described in the Introduction section, phenol has received attention due to its toxicity and common pollutant in wastewater. In addition, since phenol is the simplest class among phenolic compounds, phenol is considered to be an intermediate in the catalytic oxidation of phenolic compounds. Therefore, phenol is generally selected as a model compound for the wastewater treatment using heterogeneous catalysts.</p>
<p>For catalytic phenol oxidation, noble metal loaded catalysts have been extensively studied due to their high catalytic activity and high resistance for the metal leaching. As for the noble metal activator, Barbier et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">2005</xref>) investigated the Ru, Pd, or Pt supported on CeO<sub>2</sub> catalysts, and confirmed that the order of phenol conversion was: Ru &#x0003E; Pd &#x0003E; Pt. For the Pd activator, the abrupt deactivation was also observed due to the deposition of carbonaceous species. Lee et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">2010</xref>) studied the deactivation of catalyst during the phenol oxidation, and demonstrated that the deactivation was accelerated especially for Pt/Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> compared to Pt/CeO<sub>2</sub>. They discussed that CeO<sub>2</sub> might have promoted the oxidation of the carbonaceous deposits on the catalyst. According to Nousir et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">2008</xref>), when introducing ZrO<sub>2</sub> into the CeO<sub>2</sub> lattice, oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of Pt/Ce<sub>0.9</sub>Zr<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>2</sub> was significantly enhanced compared to that of Pt/CeO<sub>2</sub>, indicating an increase in the oxygen species mobility. Although the phenol conversion of Pt/Ce<sub>0.9</sub>Zr<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (92%) was comparable with that of Pt/CeO<sub>2</sub> (94%) after the reaction at 160&#x000B0;C and 2 MPa for 3 h, the selectivity in the complete oxidation product (CO<sub>2</sub>) for Pt/Ce<sub>0.9</sub>Zr<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (61%) was higher than that for Pt/CeO<sub>2</sub> (50%); i.e., the formation of carbonaceous species on Pt/Ce<sub>0.9</sub>Zr<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>2</sub> was suppressed compared to the Pt/CeO<sub>2</sub> case.</p>
<p>Based on the results mentioned above, the catalytic liquid-phase oxidation activities of phenol over the CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> based catalysts are tabulated in Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>. Nousir et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">2008</xref>) also compared the Pt/Ce<sub>1&#x02212;x</sub>Zr<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>O<sub>2</sub> (<italic>x</italic> &#x0003D; 0.9, 0.75, 0.5) catalysts, and demonstrated that the phenol conversion was: Pt/Ce<sub>0.9</sub>Zr<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (92%) &#x0003E; Pt/Ce<sub>0.5</sub>Zr<sub>0.5</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (80%) &#x0003E; Pt/Ce<sub>0.75</sub>Zr<sub>0.25</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (67%), and the CO<sub>2</sub> selectivity was: Pt/Ce<sub>0.5</sub>Zr<sub>0.5</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (71%) &#x0003E; Pt/Ce<sub>0.9</sub>Zr<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (61%) &#x0003E; Pt/Ce<sub>0.75</sub>Zr<sub>0.25</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (53%). Among them, the Pt/Ce<sub>0.5</sub>Zr<sub>0.5</sub>O<sub>2</sub> catalyst exhibited the highest OSC value, which caused the high CO<sub>2</sub> selectivity due to an easier elimination of the surface carbonaceous deposits. In addition, they assumed that the selectivity was also affected by the large interface between Pt and the support for Pt/Ce<sub>0.5</sub>Zr<sub>0.5</sub>O<sub>2</sub>. Keav et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">2014</xref>) reported that Ru supported on Zr<sub>0.1</sub>Ce<sub>0.9</sub>O<sub>2</sub> showed the higher phenol conversion (ca. 97%) than the Pt supported case (ca. 92%) after the reaction at 160&#x000B0;C and 2 MPa for 3 h, similar to the pure ceria supported catalysts (Barbier et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">2005</xref>). They also demonstrated that Zr<sub>0.1</sub>(Ce<sub>0.75</sub>Pr<sub>0.25</sub>)<sub>0.9</sub>O<sub>2</sub> exhibited the high OSC value compared to Zr<sub>0.1</sub>Ce<sub>0.9</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, because two kinds of valence states (Pr<sup>3&#x0002B;</sup> and Pr<sup>4&#x0002B;</sup>) modified the kinetics of oxygen transfer, leading to promoting the redox process. However, the phenol conversions using Pt or Ru supported on Zr<sub>0.1</sub>(Ce<sub>0.75</sub>Pr<sub>0.25</sub>)<sub>0.9</sub>O<sub>2</sub> was lower than each catalyst without Pr ion (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>), due to the formation of carbonaceous deposits. One possible reason of the low activity was the reduction treatment using hydrogen gas (30 mL&#x000B7;min<sup>&#x02212;1</sup>) at 350&#x02013;800&#x000B0;C for 3 h before the catalytic phenol oxidation. According to Wang et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B43">2008</xref>), a complete removal of phenol was realized for a Ru/ZrO<sub>2</sub>-CeO<sub>2</sub> (Ce/Zr &#x0003D; 9) catalyst in the fixed-bed flow reactor by applying conditions of 4 MPa and 140&#x000B0;C. In a recent study, the effective phenol removal was demonstrated even at the moderate conditions by using the catalyst, which consists of Pt and Ce<sub>0.68</sub>Zr<sub>0.17</sub>Sn<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub> dispersed on mesoporous silica SBA-16 (Santa Barbara Amorphous No. 16) with large surface area (Supandi et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">2017</xref>). They reported that the phenol conversion of Pt/Ce<sub>0.68</sub>Zr<sub>0.17</sub>Sn<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub>/SBA-16 reached up to 91% after the reaction at moderate temperature of 80&#x000B0;C and the atmospheric pressure for 6 h. Here, only ca. 4% of phenol was adsorbed into the SBA-16 support, indicating that the catalytic reaction was proceeded. They also revealed that the conversion of Pt/Ce<sub>0.68</sub>Zr<sub>0.17</sub>Sn<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub>/SBA-16 was also higher than that of Pt/Ce<sub>0.8</sub>Zr<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>/SBA-16 (85%). Based on the literature (Yasuda et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">2012</xref>), the introduction of SnO<sub>2</sub> into the CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> lattice enhanced the oxygen release and storage abilities, because of the synergistically redox reaction between Ce<sup>4&#x0002B;/3&#x0002B;</sup> and Sn<sup>4&#x0002B;/2&#x0002B;</sup>.</p>

<p>Noble-metal free catalysts for phenol removal have been also studied, as listed in Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>. Delgado et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">2012</xref>) investigated the catalytic activity of CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> without activators. Compared to pure CeO<sub>2</sub>, Ce<sub>0.68</sub>Zr<sub>0.32</sub>O<sub>2</sub> showed the high performance, where the phenol conversions of CeO<sub>2</sub> and Ce<sub>0.68</sub>Zr<sub>0.32</sub>O<sub>2</sub> were 88.4 and 98.2%, respectively, after the reaction at 160&#x000B0;C and 2 MPa for 7 h. The enhancement in the activity was explained by the increase in oxide ion mobility; i.e., the vacancies or structural defects might form by the incorporation of Zr<sup>4&#x0002B;</sup> into the fluorite CeO<sub>2</sub> structure. In the case of the Zr-rich sample (Ce<sub>0.15</sub>Zr<sub>0.85</sub>O<sub>2</sub>), the activity decreased to 89.6% due to the segregation of ZrO<sub>2</sub>. They also reported that a carbonaceous deposit was not observed after the reaction at 160&#x000B0;C, while the deposit covered the catalyst surface in the case of the reaction at 120&#x000B0;C, resulting the deactivation (phenol conversion of Ce<sub>0.68</sub>Zr<sub>0.32</sub>O<sub>2</sub>: 60.9%). In addition, they revealed the high resistance for metal leaching of CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> after the reaction. Kim et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">2009</xref>) developed various CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> supported metal oxide activators, and demonstrated that CuO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.35</sub>O<sub>2</sub> showed the high catalytic activity for phenol oxidation compared to MnO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.35</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, FeO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.35</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, CoO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.35</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, and NiO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.35</sub>O<sub>2</sub>. The complete phenol conversion was confirmed for CuO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.35</sub>O<sub>2</sub> after the reaction at 150&#x000B0;C under 5 MPa for 3 h. The high activity of CuO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.35</sub>O<sub>2</sub> was attributed to the leached copper ions, which caused a homogeneous oxidation reaction. In the case of MnO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.35</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, while the high conversion of phenol (94%) was obtained, phenol was mainly converted to carbonaceous deposits on the surface of the catalyst, which caused the deactivation. The high activity for the CuO supported on CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> was also reported by Parvas et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">2014b</xref>), while Ni/CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> showed low activity (Parvas et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">2014a</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s4">
<title>Catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of phenol derivatives</title>
<p>Up to date, effective oxidation of phenol derivatives has also been demonstrated by using CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> based catalysts, and their activities are summarized in Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T2">2</xref>. Li et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">2007</xref>) studied the oxidation of <italic>o</italic>-chlorophenol over Ru/CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> solid solutions. The Ru/CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> catalysts have higher catalytic activities than Ru/CeO<sub>2</sub> and Ru/ZrO<sub>2</sub>, because the oxygen supply to the active site from liquid phase was expected to be accelerated, where CeO<sub>2</sub> supported catalyst might also be affected by the formation of carbonates at the catalyst surface. Among the Ru/CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> systems, Ru/Ce<sub>0.16</sub>Zr<sub>0.84</sub>O<sub>2</sub> showed the highest activity, and the complete <italic>o</italic>-chlorophenol conversion was realized (140&#x000B0;C, total pressure 3 MPa, 6 h). They also reported that the introduction of a small amount of Pr or Nd into the CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> lattice enhanced the catalytic activity, because of the formation of oxygen vacancies, which increased the reducibility and facilitated the oxygen mobility. In particular, Ru/Ce<sub>0.33</sub>Zr<sub>0.63</sub>Pr<sub>0.04</sub>O<sub>2</sub> showed the high total organic carbon removal of 95% compared to the Ru/Ce<sub>0.16</sub>Zr<sub>0.84</sub>O<sub>2</sub> case (91%) (140&#x000B0;C, total pressure 3 MPa, 6 h), while both catalysts could completely convert <italic>o</italic>-chlorophenol. In the absence of Ru, Ce<sub>0.62</sub>Zr<sub>0.38</sub>O<sub>2</sub> exhibited the high <italic>o</italic>-chlorophenol conversion of 99% under the severe conditions (140&#x000B0;C, total pressure 5 MPa, 24 h).</p>

<p>For the catalytic oxidation of bisphenol-A, most of catalysts were used in combination with strong oxidizing reagent (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> etc.) or UV irradiation (Ohko et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">2001</xref>; Mayani et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">2014</xref>; Liu et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">2016</xref>; Zhou et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">2016</xref>). Heponiemi et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">2015</xref>) reported the catalytic decomposition of bisphenol-A using Ag supported on CeO<sub>2</sub>-based catalysts. The bisphenol-A abatement of Ag/CeO<sub>2</sub> was 51% after the reaction at 160&#x000B0;C for 3 h under a pressure of 2 MPa, where ca. 12% of bisphenol-A was adsorbed on the catalyst. By adding a small amount of ZrO<sub>2</sub> to CeO<sub>2</sub>, the bisphenol-A removal percentage was enhanced; i.e., the removal percentage of Ag/Ce<sub>0.85</sub>Zr<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub> was 76% with 1% adsorption of bisphenol-A at the same condition. Choi et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">2017</xref>) demonstrated that the CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub>-Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> supported on SBA-16 catalyst exhibited the catalytic activity for bisphenol-A oxidation, and 86% of bisphenol-A conversion was achieved for Ce<sub>0.67</sub>Zr<sub>0.18</sub>Bi<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub>/SBA-16 even with the moderate reaction conditions of 80&#x000B0;C for 3 h under atmospheric pressure. Here, this conversion of Ce<sub>0.67</sub>Zr<sub>0.18</sub>Bi<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub>/SBA-16 was higher than that of Ce<sub>0.85</sub>Zr<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub>/SBA-16 (60%). This enhancement was explained by the high oxygen release and storage abilities of Ce<sub>0.67</sub>Zr<sub>0.18</sub>Bi<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, because the introduction of Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> into the CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> lattice facilitated the oxygen supply via oxygen vacancies, formed by the replacement of Ce<sup>4&#x0002B;</sup> and Zr<sup>4&#x0002B;</sup> sites by the lower-valent Bi<sup>3&#x0002B;</sup> ion (Imanaka et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">2007</xref>). Choi et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">2017</xref>) also reported that the Ce<sub>0.67</sub>Zr<sub>0.18</sub>Bi<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>2</sub>/SBA-16 catalyst maintained a high conversion after three consecutive reactions without the deactivation.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s5">
<title>Conclusion and perspectives</title>
<p>In this mini-review, recent studies on catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of phenolic compounds using CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> based catalysts are summarized. By using CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> as a promoter, the catalytic activity was facilitated compared to the bare oxides, such as Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and CeO<sub>2</sub>. Pt/CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> and Ru/CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> catalysts exhibited high activities for phenol conversion, and the complete phenol decomposition was realized for the Ru/ZrO<sub>2</sub>-CeO<sub>2</sub> (Ce/Zr &#x0003D; 9) catalyst under conditions of 140&#x000B0;C and 4 MPa. Even at the moderate conditions of 80&#x000B0;C and atmospheric pressure, the high phenol conversion of 91% was demonstrated by dispersing Pt and CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub>-SnO<sub>2</sub> into SBA-16. Noble metal free catalysts have been also developed, and phenol was completely removed using the CuO<sub><italic>x</italic></sub>/CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> catalyst, in which the leached Cu<sup>2&#x0002B;</sup> ions promoted the phenol oxidation by work as a homogeneous catalyst.</p>
<p>CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> was also effective for the removal of phenol derivatives. Ru/Ce<sub>0.33</sub>Zr<sub>0.63</sub>Pr<sub>0.04</sub>O<sub>2</sub> completely converted <italic>o</italic>-chlorophenol, and the total organic carbon removal of 95% was realized. For the bisphenol-A removal, the conversions of Ag/CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub> and CeO<sub>2</sub>-ZrO<sub>2</sub>-Bi<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>/SBA-16 were 76% (reaction conditions: 160&#x000B0;C, 2 MPa, 3 h) and 86% (reaction conditions: 80&#x000B0;C, atmospheric pressure, 3 h), respectively.</p>
<p>For future perspective, it is necessary to realize complete oxidation of phenolic compounds in facile operating conditions at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure, from the viewpoint of economically, safety, and sustainably. In addition, the suppression of the deactivation, caused by the carbonaceous deposit and the metal leaching, should be considered. Since one effective method to remove the carbonaceous deposit is the complete oxidation of phenols to carbon dioxide and water, the improvement in the oxygen release ability of the promoter would be a key factor, which also leads to the high catalytic activity. For enhancing the ability of the promoter, the formation of the oxygen vacancies in the lattice might lead to the increase in reducibility and the oxygen mobility. Here, to avoid the metal leaching, the composition of the promoter should be carefully selected. Further investigations would lead to the development of novel catalysts with high efficiency for practical applications.</p>
