TITLE=Genotype and age of industrial plant Jatropha curcas L. affect physico-chemical properties of seed oil JOURNAL=Frontiers in Energy Research VOLUME=Volume 10 - 2022 YEAR=2022 URL=https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/energy-research/articles/10.3389/fenrg.2022.979217 DOI=10.3389/fenrg.2022.979217 ISSN=2296-598X ABSTRACT=Jatropha curcas, an industrial oil producing plant is well known for its biofuel, medicinal and pharmaceutical properties. It has been used for treatment of skin, cancer, digestive and infectious diseases. Non-edible seed oil of Jatropha curcas has been identified as promising alternative source for biodiesel, soap, glue, dye production. To achieve sustainable biodiesel production, the present study targets to investigate oil content in seed and its properties. The oil was extracted using n-hexane as solvent in the Soxhlet extraction apparatus from seed karnel collected from different genotypes and age of the plant. Oil content in the karnel ranged from 49.78-53.75 % (w/w) among the seed samples depending on genetic materials and plant age. The oil content showed very little but significant differences for density and specific gravity among the samples. The highest free fatty acid (FAA) was produced by the karnel oil of 3-years old plant (7.78%) and, 7 and 10-years old plants gave the lowest FAA (1.26 and 1.31%, respectively). The karnel oil of 7-years old plant produced the highest iodine value (93.60 mg/g oil) and karnel oil of 3-years old plant produced the lowest iodine value (61.10 mg/g oil). Karnel oil of 10-years old plant gave the lowest (172. 98 mg KOH/g) saponification value and 4-years old Hybrid-3 gave the maximum value (209.97 mg KOH/g oil). Seed oil of Jatropha accessions showed very little difference (39.88-40.85 MJ/kg) for high heating value irrespective of their age. On the other hand, cetane number varied from 55.32 to 59.58 in the oil samples. The age of plant and seed sources had significant effect on seed oil content and its physio-chemical properties of Jatropha.
