Social and Cultural Sustainability of Tehran City: Structure and Priority of Indicators

Introduction: This research has investigated the nature and type of indicators of social and cultural sustainability in Tehran.
Using quantitative methodology, survey method and analytic network process (ANP) technique, the present study has compiled and prioritized the indicators of social and cultural sustainability construct of the city of Tehran with regard to the role of the municipality and the city council.
Method: Using quantitative methodology, survey method and analytic network process (ANP) technique, the present study has compiled and prioritized the indicators of social and cultural sustainability construct of the city of Tehran with regard to the role of the municipality and the city council. In this method, the indicators were finalized after compiling the initial list, refining, validating and weighting by 30 related experts.
Results: The priority of social sustainability indicators is related to equality and justice, social participation, social responsibility, stability of local communities, recognization of social groups, preservation and improvement of urban nature, sustainability of population and work reorganization. In the dimension of cultural sustainability of Tehran city, the indicators of cultural diversity, cultural participation, cultural equality, cultural identity, cultural heritage, prosperity and realization, and innovation were ranked, respectively.
Discussion: The results indicate that social and cultural sustainability is a totality which, on the one hand, based on its dialectical logic, has fluidity, dynamism and transformation, and as a result, static indicators cannot be given for it, and on the other hand, its indicators cannot be derived from this totality. In fact, all these components are not an isolated and independent concept from other components, and all these components together build the totality of social and cultural sustainability of Tehran city.
