The discipline of bioinformatics and computational biology sits at the interface between biology, the quantitative sciences (such as mathematics, statistics, computer science) and engineering, and spans levels of investigation from single genes to systems. Section Bioinformatics and Computational Biology aims to rapidly publish new methods, research findings, opinions, and hypothesis articles on all aspects of the discipline.
As bioinformatics and computational biology bridges data interpretation (e.g. in genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics) and software development, the section welcomes Original Research and Methods articles describing new analytical approaches and code — which may be as brief as required for accurate presentation. Additionally, reviews of new approaches can be submitted as Technology Reports.
As is fitting in such a fast-moving, broad discipline, we also seek attempts to connect different sub-fields of bioinformatics, as well as those that examine the history of bioinformatics and computational biology.
Section Bioinformatics and Computational Biology particularly encourages the submission of papers that discuss
i) new or improved algorithms, software and online services dealing with all of the below;
ii) analysis of amino acid and nucleotide sequences and structures;
iii) analysis of large multidimensional numeric datasets, including gene-expression; gene and protein interaction data; metabolite and small molecule profiling; and more;
iv) quantitative analysis of biological images;
v) phylogenetic approaches to biological questions;
vi) computational analysis of evolution of all life forms;
vii) mathematical or statistical modeling of all of the above.
