Process and Industrial Biotechnology is dedicated to publications dealing with the development of biosciences through the challenges of discovery, scaling-up and industrial applications. Since several years biotechnology in the general point of view has become one of the centres of scientific research in the domain of biological sciences. For example, synthetic biology, the last development of this domain, has allowed dramatic progress in the understanding of life mechanisms, and applications are already on the way in different directions: biological chemistry, pharmaceuticals, energy, and many others are expected in the next few years. One of the remaining challenges to fulfil is the processing of scaled up applications at the industrial scale which generally asks for new developments and technologies. This is the main scope of this section, to publish original research articles, reviews, and methods dealing with the progress in such applications from all domains of life sciences: microbiology, health, analytics, natural products, and production of new chemical entities of biological interest.

Process and Industrial Biotechnology welcomes submissions of the following article types: Book Review, Correction, Data Report, Editorial, General Commentary, Hypothesis and Theory, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Protocols, Review, Specialty Grand Challenge, Systematic Review and Technology Report.
All manuscripts must be submitted directly to the section Process and Industrial Biotechnology, where they are peer-reviewed by the Associate and Review Editors of the specialty section.
Articles published in the section Process and Industrial Biotechnology will benefit from the Frontiers impact and tiering system after online publication. Authors of published original research with the highest impact, as judged democratically by the readers, will be invited by the Chief Editor to write a Frontiers Focused Review - a tier-climbing article. This is referred to as "democratic tiering". The author selection is based on article impact analytics of original research published in all Frontiers specialty journals and sections. Focused Reviews are centered on the original discovery, place it into a broader context, and aim to address the wider community across all of Bioengineering and Biotechnology.
