Regulated cell death (RCD) is involved in maintaining the heart tissue, and its changes are of great significance for heart pathophysiology. However, the classical cell death mode cannot fully explain the occurrence and development of heart diseases. In recent years, it has been found that ferroptosis, a type of cell death, causes cell damage by regulating the accumulation of lipid peroxide and participating in the process of coronary atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and other diseases. In this study, we discuss the role of different organelles in ferroptosis, focus on the relationship between ferroptosis and other existing classical cell death modes, and the CVD-specific mechanisms of ferroptosis. Finally, we summarize the current research on ferroptosis-related pathway inhibitors and the applications of clinically beneficial cardiovascular drugs.
