Microbiome in Health and Disease is a specialty section within leading open access journal, Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology. Publishing rigorously peer-reviewed research, this section highlights the impact of the microbiota on health and disease. Studies using a broad range of hosts and model systems, that seek to provide understanding of human health and disease are welcomed. Research in this area advances understanding of how a host-associated microbiota is maintained and/or perturbed in a manner that promotes health or disease, respectively, in that host.

Studies using a broad range of hosts and model systems, that seek to provide understanding of human health and disease are welcomed. Research in this area advances understanding of how a host-associated microbiota is maintained and/or perturbed in a manner that promotes health or disease, respectively, in that host.
Subject specific examples include:
1) Infectious disease; especially how microbiota in general or specific microbiota compositions promote or protect against pathogenic microbes.
2) How microbes drive and contribute to classic chronic inflammatory diseases of the gut, lung and urogenital tract.
3) Research focusing on microbial communities such as the human skin microbiome and oral microbiome.
4) Other diseases states such as cancer, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, which have more recently been shown to be impacted by microbiota composition.
In addition to manuscripts reporting results of new experimentation, review articles and opinion pieces are encouraged.
