TITLE=Predictors of Teachers’ Self-Efficacy in Teaching EFL: An Examination of “Nativeness” and Teachers’ Training JOURNAL=Frontiers in Education VOLUME=Volume 6 - 2021 YEAR=2021 URL=https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/education/articles/10.3389/feduc.2021.729271 DOI=10.3389/feduc.2021.729271 ISSN=2504-284X ABSTRACT=The study aimed to establish teacher training and ‘nativeness’ on teachers’ self-efficacy in teaching English as a second language. A total of 281 foreign teachers in Chengdu, China, participated in the survey. The teacher’s sense of efficacy scale was used to measure a teacher’s self-efficacy. We adopted MANOVA and tested the influence of ‘nativeness’ and teachers’ training on teachers’ self-efficacy. Our analysis showed that while being a native speaker does not necessarily influence a teacher’s self-efficacy, trained teachers have higher self-efficacy than untrained teachers. Thus, the study confirms that language proficiency should not be allied with being a language teacher. Instead, educational administrators and policymakers should focus on language teachers’ professional development and disregard native/nonnative teachers’ distinction.
