So far, mechanisms underlying the development of T2D are still largely unknown. Investigations of these potential regulatory pathways may not only help us to better understand the pathology of T2D, but also provide new ideas to treat the root of diseases. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small vesicles released from cells, which have been identified as critical mediators of a novel cell-to-cell communication. Nowadays, a growing number of evidence has reported that EVs are largely altered under T2D condition, which greatly influence the pathological process of T2D. In this review, we briefly introduce the regulatory mechanisms underlying EV-based cell-to-cell communication in T2D, which provide novel therapeutic targets in T2D, besides, we also discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of EVs in T2D and its complications.
