JOURNAL=Frontiers in Immunology VOLUME=Volume 13 - 2022 YEAR=2022 URL=https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/immunology/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2022.877303 DOI=10.3389/fimmu.2022.877303 ISSN=1664-3224 ABSTRACT=The outbreak of COVID-19 is caused by the infection of SARS-CoV-2, which leads to the disruption of immune system, exacerbated inflammation, and even multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Sarcoidosis characterized by compact, epithelioid, non-necrotizing lesions with varying degrees of lymphocytic inflammation, is an idiopathic granulomatous multisystem disease. These two diseases not only have similarities in clinical manifestations, but may also influence each other and affect their clinical courses. We analyzed some possible connections between sarcoidosis and COVID-19, including the role of the RAS in the respiratory system, immune response, and cell death pathways to understand potential mechanisms predisposing individuals to severe forms of SARS-CoV-2 infection and provide a new prospect for the treatment of COVID-19 and an opportunity to better understand the pathogenesis of sarcoidosis.
