Scope

Integration of novel materials into functional real-world devices requires an intensive collaboration between scientists and engineers. We aim to provide an interface between the engineering and scientific communities to foster translational research contributions from the critical steps of materials to the first steps of engineering and the adoption of engineered materials to meet the needs in healthcare, biotechnology, industry and energy. We encourage submissions on the whole range of materials and biomaterials research demonstrating novel device functionalities or improved performance. Unique material properties as well as reproducibility, reliability under non-ideal environmental conditions and market needs are addressed. On a systems level, we are interested to receive solutions to integrate functional materials in novel workflows, such as pre- and post-analytical steps around novel sensing devices. Furthermore, we are open to discuss research projects where material integration attempts need further optimization and discuss the reasons for previous failure in a constructive manner from both an engineering as well as material properties perspectives.

Our topics include:

matching material fabrication to industrial quality and safety needs by addressing toxicity, purity, scalability

tuning of device characteristics for integration in electrical circuits and for real-world environments, such as impedance matching or spectral sensitivity

integration of functional materials, such as sensors, in systems which require high robustness and low fabrication effort during translation to product launch

adoption of mature materials for novel applications, such as CMOS applied for life sciences

benchmark experiments with existing technologies which indicate the integration potential of novel functional materials

proofs of concept of next-generation technologies which require joint development of materials and systems, such as nanopore sequencing or photoelectrolysis

We welcome critical opinions on functional material patents and news as well as videos with experimental demonstrations of successful material integration or – equally important – failures. We encourage non-academic contributions from industry and research organizations. We also encourage research consortia to submit mission statements of newly granted projects and to discuss the potential impact of their material research work.

Submission

Translational Materials Science welcomes submissions of the following article types: Correction, Editorial, Mini Review, Original Research, Perspective and Review.

All manuscripts must be submitted directly to the section Translational Materials Science, where they are peer-reviewed by the Associate and Review Editors of the specialty section.

Articles published in the section Translational Materials Science will benefit from the Frontiers impact and tiering system after online publication. Authors of published original research with the highest impact, as judged democratically by the readers, will be invited by the Chief Editor to write a Frontiers Focused Review - a tier-climbing article. This is referred to as "democratic tiering". The author selection is based on article impact analytics of original research published in all Frontiers specialty journals and sections. Focused Reviews are centered on the original discovery, place it into a broader context, and aim to address the wider community across all of Materials.
