Abstract

Access to the clinical use of ultrasound imaging by physical therapists (e.g., costs, portability, and educational resources) has improved significantly over the last 5-10 years, while the clinical applications for ultrasound imaging continue to expand. Along with this rapid growth, substantial evidence has been developed regarding the value of ultrasound imaging in physical therapy practice, particularly in orthopedic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, pediatric, and pelvic health physical therapy. This perspective presents a sample of the type and strength of evidence for the applications of ultrasound imaging in physical therapy practice, evaluating injuries or pathologies of bone, ligament, tendon, muscle, nerve, heart, vascular, lung, and pelvic structures. Combining clinical examination findings with a valuable objective clinical tool will increase the availability of quality data that clinicians can incorporate into their clinical reasoning process, ultimately leading to improved patient care, efficiency, and outcomes. To integrate ultrasound imaging effectively into physical therapy practice across various practice areas, physical therapists require education and training. Educational models, strategies, curricular recommendations, and outcomes in professional programs, including physical therapy, are discussed with a forward-looking perspective.
