TITLE=Immunotherapy in Breast Cancer and the Potential Role of Liquid Biopsy JOURNAL=Frontiers in Oncology VOLUME=Volume 12 - 2022 YEAR=2022 URL=https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/oncology/articles/10.3389/fonc.2022.802579 DOI=10.3389/fonc.2022.802579 ISSN=2234-943X ABSTRACT=Liquid biopsy biomarkers, such as circulating tumor cells (CTC) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), are noninvasive diagnostics that could complement predictive and prognostic tools currently used in the clinic. Recent trials of immunotherapy have shown promise in improving outcomes in a subset of breast cancer patients. Biomarkers could improve the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors by identifying patients who will respond to immunotherapy and those who are likely to benefit from it. In this review, we discuss the current applications of liquid biopsy for evaluation of immunotherapy response and outcomes in breast cancer. We also provide an overview of the status of immunotherapy in breast cancer as well as emerging liquid biopsy technologies and their potential utility for evaluating response and improving outcomes of breast cancer patients treated with immuno-oncology therapies.
